What Not to Do While Organizing Your Storage Spaces

Have you de-cluttered your house lately? The average American moves about 11.7 times in their life, and one in six people move every year. Since less clutter makes moving easier, it’s always a good idea to organize your house periodically to keep things from backing up.

Whether you’re using a storage space company or just a few very strategic closets to organize your clutter, here are some organizing mistakes you should avoid:

Don’t buy storage supplies before you organize:
It can be tempting to go out and buy a fleet of bins, baskets and boxes for your valuables before you even start, but it’s not a good idea. If you buy too many bins, you’ll just contribute to the clutter you’re trying to get rid of. Besides, if you plan on keeping some bins in your home and some in your storage container, you may find that the bins you buy don’t fit in the spaces you end up clearing out. Get everything in order, then buy your storage containers strategically.

Don’t try to do everything at once:
Setting aside a whole day for a whole house de-cluttering session may seem like a great idea, but even the most determined home organizers will burn out before the day is over. Organizing all day can lead to frustration and loss of efficiency. Budget your time to only two to three hours on any given day, to keep yourself energetic and motivated.

Don’t leave tasks unfinished:
It’s pretty common to sort things into categories as you organize, but once that job is done, don’t give up with piles all over the place! Throw out bags of garbage and recycling, bring donations to drop-off points or at least put them in your car, and make arrangements with your storage and moving company to pick up any items destined for storage space containers. This way, you won’t have to come back later and try to remember what each pile was and clutter won’t keep building in your house.

Don’t hang onto unrealistic expectations:
No one’s drawers and closets look like magazine pictures, at least not for long. If you go into cleaning with the idea that it’s going to look perfect at the end, you’ll always be disappointed. Remember, your goal is to set up storage spaces that are practical, functional and useful for you.

Remember, even the best storage space company can’t do much for you if you don’t have a plan for your house and storage containers. Go in with the right attitude and you’ll do just fine!
